Learn more about what to expect when you need to get a colonoscopy.colonoscopy

While the idea of getting a colonoscopy may not seem like the perfect day you had in mind, if you want to protect yourself from colorectal cancer, it’s time you turned to our Rego Park, NY, gastroenterologists for this routine procedure. If you’ve never had a colonoscopy before, or if we’ve recently told you that you should get one, you may have questions. Fortunately, we have answers.

What is a colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is an outpatient exam that our Rego Park GI doctor will use to get a better look into how the large intestines are functioning. While you may just be getting a routine colonoscopy, we may also recommend getting one if you are dealing with unexplained rectal bleeding, changes in bowel movements or abdominal pain.

Who should get a colonoscopy?

It’s standard practice for both men and women to get a routine colonoscopy when they turn 50 years old. Based on the findings from this test, we will determine how often you should come in again. Patients who don’t have any risk factors for colorectal cancer and whose colonoscopy results come back fine will often not need to come back for another test for another 10 years.

What are the risk factors for colorectal cancer?

There are some lifestyle and health conditions that could predispose you to colorectal cancer including:

  • Leading an inactive lifestyle
  • Not getting enough fiber
  • Eating a high-fat diet that’s rich in red and processed meats
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Familial history of colorectal cancer or polyps
  • Personal history of colorectal cancer or polyps
  • Being over age 50
  • Heavy alcohol consumption
  • Smoking
  • Certain genetic conditions such as familial adenomatous polyposis

Queens Boulevard Endoscopy Center in Rego Park, NY, is dedicated to providing the very best in gastrointestinal care. Whether you need to schedule your first routine colonoscopy or you are dealing with concerning symptoms, we are always here for you.
