Colon cancer is the third on the list of most diagnosed malignancies among American adults, says the American Cancer Society. At Queens Boulevard Endoscopy Center in Rego Park, NY your team of board-certified gastroenterologists carefully screen patients over 50 for signs of this treatable cancer. Is it time for your screening?

The signs of colon cancer

There are many, but unfortunately, many people show no appreciable signs until their cancers are more advanced and difficult to treat. That's why routine colon cancer screening starting at age 50 is so important.

These GI symptoms should be evaluated at Queens Boulevard Endoscopy Center:

  • Weight loss
  • Blood in the stool
  • Change bowel habits--either constipation or very loose stools
  • Feeling that the bowel has not fully evacuated
  • Abdominal cramps or persistent gas

Screening for colon cancer

So, if that 50th birthday is approaching, or you've already had it, please contact your gastroenterologist for a colon cancer screening test. While testing for the occult, or hidden, blood in the stool is the least invasive and simplest colon cancer test, it is not as accurate as colonoscopy. In fact, most healthy adults schedule colonoscopies as their doctor advises to be sure all is well in their large bowel and rectum.

The test is done right at Queens Center Endoscopy Center by one of our physician specialists. It involves the insertion of a lighted tube into the rectum and up through the large intestine. This tube also contains a miniature camera which shows the doctor real-time images of the intestinal mucosa. Throughout your colonoscopy, you'll be sedated, able to respond to simple commands and completely comfortable as you lie on your side.

With the scope, your gastroenterologist also can sample tissues he deems irregular--that is, polyps or other lesions. These samples are biopsied to check for cancer and other diseases of the bowel.

Discovery and removal of polyps are one of the most reliable ways to both detect and ward off cancer. Why is this so? It's because small adenomas, or polyps, can be or may become cancerous. So, detection and removal are essential.

When your 45-minute examination is complete, your doctor will review your results with you and send you home with a friend or loved one. Biopsy reports take a few days.

Peace of mind

Routine colon cancer screening benefits both you and your loved ones as you're assured of your good colon health or uncover problems at their earliest stages when they are more easily treated.
