Stomach pain—whether episodic or chronic—is concerning. It impacts your daily function and can have you worrying that you have a stomach-painserious medical condition. At Queens Boulevard Endoscopy Center in Rego Park, NY, your team of five board-certified stomach doctors pinpoint the underlying causes of a variety of upper and lower GI problems. Read on to learn more!

Location and timing

Stomach pain centers in the area around your umbilicus (belly button) but can also radiate around the back and down into the lower abdomen. Sometimes a stomach ache is acute, precipitated by:

  • A virus or bacteria (such as Heliobacter pylori, the cause of ulcers and some cancers)
  • Stress
  • Gas
  • Constipation
  • Flu
  • Food allergies and sensitivities
  • Pregnancy
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Tobacco
  • Alcohol

However, sometimes pain in the area of the stomach is chronic. When undetected and unmanaged, these conditions will lead to continuing problems in many adults patients:

  • Pancreatitis
  • Gastritis
  • GERD (acid reflux disease)
  • Gall stones
  • Kidney stones
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBS)
  • Ulcers

What you should do

Speak to your primary care physician. He or she may refer you to our Reno Park office. Here, you will confer with one of our five board-certified gastroenterologists. We will review your symptoms and do a complete physical examination, including lab work as needed.

Also, our doctors may use a very effective and minimally invasive test called endoscopy, or EGD. Performed with the benefit of oral conscious sedation, endoscopy allows the physician to visualize the entire esophagus, stomach, and upper small intestine.

The scope itself is a narrow, flexible tube with a tiny camera and light. The physician takes still photos and real-time video of interior structures, and he may sample tissue for further analysis such as biopsy. He'll review his findings with you and set up an individualized treatment plan to address your stomach pain, either eliminating it or managing it for the long term
