What is Diverticulosis?
Diverticulosis is a condition that causes inflammation of the small pouches (diverticula) that form in the lining of your lower gastrointestinal tract (typically in the large intestine). Diverticula are common in people over the age of 40 and seldom cause problems. When they do become inflamed, they can have a negative impact on your normal bowel movements and cause fever, nausea, and severe abdominal pain. The specialist team at Queens Boulevard Endoscopy Center in New York’s Rego Park can diagnose and treat diverticulosis.
Signs and Symptoms of Diverticulitis
Rego Park residents may be suffering from diverticulitis if they notice the following signs or symptoms:
- Persistent abdominal pain, particularly in the lower left side of the abdomen
- Fever
- Tenderness in the abdominal region
- Nausea and vomiting
- Constipation
You should consult a physician if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, particularly if they are accompanied by a fever.
What Causes Diverticulitis?
Diverticulitis may occur if you have weak spots in your colon that collapse under pressure. This causes the small pouches to bulge out through the wall of your large intestine. This causes inflammation and can lead to infection.
What are the Risk Factors for Diverticulitis?
Factors that may increase your risk of diverticulitis include:
- Smoking cigarettes
- Aging
- Overweight or obesity
- A sedentary lifestyle
- A diet that is low in fiber and high in animal fat
- Certain medications
Diverticulitis Treatment
If your symptoms are mild you can use relaxation techniques, a heating pad, and over the counter pain medications to ease the discomfort. If your symptoms persist or the condition is severe, your doctor will prescribe a course of antibiotics. You should complete the course even if your symptoms start to resolve.
