Not sure why you have heartburn? The gastroenterologists at Queens Boulevard Endoscopy Center in Rego Park, NY, share a few heartburncommon causes of heartburn and explain what you can do to prevent the condition.

Why do I have heartburn?

Heartburn can occur due to a variety of reasons, such as:

  • The Foods and Beverages You Consume: Do you enjoy fatty, fried or acidic foods? You may be more likely to experience heartburn after eating these foods. Common culprits include caffeinated beverages, peppermint, chocolate, onions, garlic, spicy foods, tomatoes and citrus fruits.
  • The Medications You Take: Heartburn can be a side effect of some medications, including anti-anxiety drugs, antibiotics, osteoporosis medications and steroids. Even over-the-counter medications can cause painful heartburn. Ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen sodium are very effective in relieving aches and pains but they can bother your stomach and cause heartburn.
  • GERD: Gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD) is a common cause of heartburn. The disorder occurs when stomach acids flow back into the esophagus due to a lower esophageal sphincter that's weak or too relaxed. GERD may be a problem if you experience heartburn symptoms more twice per week.
  • Your Weight: Heartburn is more likely if you're overweight or obese.
  • Your Habits: Smoking tobacco products or drinking alcohol can trigger heartburn.
  • Your Pregnancy: Increased progesterone production during pregnancy can cause the sphincter to become too relaxed.
  • Your Exercise Habits: Exercising soon after eating can cause that uncomfortable pain in your chest, particularly if you run or do exercises that involve bending or lifting. In fact, any exercise that puts pressure on the stomach can cause heartburn.

What Can I Do About My Heartburn?

If you've noticed that your symptoms tend to occur after eating certain foods, taking pain relievers or performing certain exercises, making a few changes to your routine may be all you need to do avoid heartburn. When your symptoms persist, it's a good idea to schedule an appointment with our Rego Park office. We may recommend an endoscopy, a minimally invasive test that provides an up-close view of your esophagus thanks to a miniature scope and camera. Depending on the results of the test, we may recommend that you take one or more medications to block or reduce acid production, improve the functioning of the sphincter or help foods make the journey through your gastrointestinal system more quickly.
